As a working class woman of color, Val has devoted her life to social justice in her community. Val was born in Jacksonville, Florida, the daughter of a maid and janitor. Although she grew up poor, her mother taught her that if she worked hard, she could live the American Dream. After graduating college, Val went to work as a social worker, specializing in foster care, to help families most in need.

Mayor – Orange County, Florida – Challenger. Polls show Val has a clear advantage over her opponent as she connects with more voters, particularly independents.

In 2012, Val ran a close race for Florida’s 10th Congressional District, where she was endorsed by WCF.

Until June 2011, Val had served as Orlando’s first female Chief of Police.

In 2006, Val was appointed as Deputy Chief to the Patrol Services Bureau.

She has served as the Commander of Special Operations where she managed special events, dignitary protection, traffic enforcement, traffic homicide, marine patrol, the K-9 and Vehicles for Hire Units, and the Reserve and Auxiliary Units.

She served 12 years on the Crisis Negotiation Team, as Commander of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team, and as Executive Vice President of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police.
