Rebecca’s story is one of overcoming adversity. Raised by a single mother with three siblings, Rebecca went from growing up in a thriving working class family to one struggling with unemployment, poverty, and at times, homelessness. She has a genuine understanding of the big challenges that many Michigan families face on a daily basis. In addition to the valuable perspective she would bring to the State House, this is an opportunity for voters in the 1st district to start over and elect the kind of leader that shares their values.

State House of Representatives – Michigan’s 1st District – Challenger. The incumbent, Brian Banks, is an eight-time felon and since being elected in 2012, he has been sued for sexual harassment by his own staff.

Rebecca serves as the Senior Director of Engagement at the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

By the time she graduated from the Detroit School of Arts, Rebecca had interned at New Detroit, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating racial disparities in the region, and later for the Wayne County Commission.

While at North Michigan University, Rebecca was active in numerous student organizations and was elected the first African-American female student body president in the school’s 100-year history.

Rebecca is the former Director of Young People For, a national long-term leadership development initiative that works to identify, engage, and empower the newest generation of progressive leaders to create lasting change in their communities.

Rebeca led the Front Line Leaders Academy, a national nine-month program that trains young progressive candidates to run for office and become campaign managers.
