Having a strong, qualified woman of color lead our nation’s capital, and one of the largest cities in the country, would send a powerful signal about the role of women in government. Nationwide, only 18% of mayors are women. And of the 100 largest cities in the country, only Baltimore currently has an African American woman mayor.

Mayor – District of Columbia – Open Seat. Muriel staged an impressive campaign to defeat the incumbent mayor in the April 1st primary. She now faces an Independent in the general election. If elected, Muriel would be only the 2nd African American woman to serve as mayor of DC.

Muriel was first elected DC Councilmember for Ward 4 in a special election in 2007 and re-elected in 2008, and again in 2012.

On the City Council, Muriel serves as the Chairwoman of the Committee on Economic Development and previously served as Chairwoman of the Committee on Government Operations.

Muriel worked with her colleagues to pass comprehensive Ethics Reform in the District of Columbia, improved the safety and efficiency of the Metro system, and increased transparency in government contracting.

Muriel served as Chair of the Committee on Libraries, Parks, and Recreation and the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs. She also served as Chair of the regional Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Transportation Planning Board.
