Growing up in a single parent household, Alma saw that the best way to get ahead was through dedication and hard work. With her 30 years of public service, Alma Adams is not only extremely qualified to represent North Carolina in Congress, she is also a woman of color who is incredibly dedicated to the advancement of women, in politics and elsewhere.

U.S. House of Representatives – North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District – Open Seat. A woman has never represented this district in Congress. The majority of the district lives in the Triad (the area of Guilford, Davison, and Forsyth), which Alma has represented in the state legislature for 21 years.

Adams was first elected to public office in 1983, when she served on the Greensboro City School Board , and became the first African-American woman elected to that body.

She ran for Greensboro City Council in 1987 and served four terms.

In 1994, she appointed to the State Legislature and is currently in her 11th term.

Adams has sponsored and supported legislation to strengthen domestic violence laws, make quality, affordable healthcare available to seniors and children, and worked to improve adolescent pregnancy programs.

She is also the former chair of the North Carolina Women’s Legislative Caucus.
