WCF President/CEO Sam Bennett reflects on the importance of International Women’s Day – and the road ahead

(WASHINGTON, DC) – As the country’s only national, non-partisan organization of its kind dedicated to achieving gender equality in government, Women’s Campaign Forum (WCF) proudly joins the global community in recognizing International Women’s Day and the immeasurable contributions of the women the day honors.

“We know that over the past hundred years, women around the world have made remarkable economic, political, and social strides,” says WCF President/CEO Sam Bennett. “These are gains that women have fought for – and won. International Women’s Day honors the accomplishments of these heroines – from the small business owner in Uganda, to the scientist in Bangladesh, to the entrepreneur in Shanghai. While celebrating the achievements of women throughout generations and around the world is awe-inspiring, it is equally important to remember that there is still work to be done, both here at home and abroad.”

“Currently, the United States ranks 87th in the world in the number of women represented in our national legislature. We know that when women who support reproductive health serve in public office, our communities prosper. In particular, we know that women’s ability to determine the timing and spacing of their children is directly linked to the development and sustainment of strong, vibrant economies. Unfortunately, we also know that women are far less likely to consider running for office than men, and when women do run, they face sexism, smear campaigns, and ruthless personal attacks. Supporting women in their decision to run for office does more than bolster women – it enhances the world. As we recognize International Women’s Day, I am both proud and honored to continue WCF’s important work on behalf of women, our communities, and our world.”
